Goin' To The Fair

The Los Angeles County Fair is billed as the biggest in the country, and by the end of a day walking it, you believe it! This is a "fairgoers fair", compared to the more entertainment-oriented (and smaller) Orange County Fair. Every imaginable fair attraction is here: from livestock, to homemade goods, to the Midway, to thrill rides, to big name entertainment...even horse races!--and usually in several variations. The top tip from the Five Fischers? Two words: "valet parking". Seriously. It is well, well worth it, especially if you have little ones--the parking lot is I think also the country's biggest! Here are some shots from our recent visit (the 1999 run is closed now, but their Web site is already primed for 2000).

Joe says, "I'm gonna drive this when I grow up!"

What's a visit to the fair without a ride on the carousel? Anna wasn't too sure about Lori's choice of animals, though...

Jamie gets a weaving lesson from an obliging craftsperson.

One of many strolling musical acts. These guys were pretty good, and obviously having lots of fun. The trombone guy liked to chase kids with his slide.

Living (or, as the case may be, re-living) your childhood. (Jamie was too good at sliding and scooted right out of the foreground!)

And the obligatory elephant ride. (The Fischer kids are the ones in front.)

They had an amazing display of life-size dinosaur models that took up a whole building. For budding archaeologists, you could also dig for "dinosaur bones" in this huge sand pit.

There were many community organizations represented at the Fair. Here the kids are outfitted with firefighter's clothes by a real fireman!
